Abstract

How do students' experiences relate to civic virtues and how do these experiences have their effect? The current research uses studying abroad – an extracurricular activity that requires collaboration in living and exposure to different cultures – to examine this question. In addition to investigating changes in civic virtue, the current study also examines the differential relationships of study abroad to civic virtue by gender. This study measured civility and civic engagement as proxy variables of civic virtue to assess whether the experience of studying abroad is related to increases in students’ civic virtue. In addition, variables – such as empathy and cultural competence – are also used to measure students’ psychology related to civic virtue. One hundred and twenty-one college students from the University of Chicago completed surveys before and after their study abroad experiences to measure changes in these variables related to civic virtue. The results indicate that study abroad is significantly related to changes in civility, empathy, and cultural competence regardless of gender.
