Abstract

Every community has a love-hate relationship with newcomers. We rely on newcomers to bring in new perspectives, and to maintain activity level within the community. Yet, the fear among old members that the in uxes of newcomers would disturb the community's norm is also pervasive. This paper exploit a subscription policy on Reddit to study the effect of external user shocks on one of the music sharing groups. Data evidence shows that the number of posts and comments increased, but the proportion of posts removed by moderators also increased. The distribution of music genres shared in the community shifted greatly after the influx of new users. A great number of old members gradually existed the community, but those who remained quickly became accustomized to the new norms. At the end of the story, the community in my case study took the pain to survive the new users shock but they did survive.
