Abstract
In discussing social norms, political scientists (and others) often theory-build but more rarely theory-test. Assumptions are made and occasionally backed up with psychological evidence, but the ultimate source of social constructs - cognitive functions - is rarely considered in empirical analyses. Do norm dynamics function in real-world decision making as they do in the literature? How do we reason about different kinds of norms, and can we see the theorized boundaries and distinctions accurately reflected in an experimental behavioral analysis? A crowdsourced online reaction time (RT) experiment casts substantial doubt on the status of theories IR norms as internalized.
