Despite being arguably the most important institution in the Mongol Empire, there is still much that remains unknown about the Mongol military. One such component is the qara’ul. This contribution will explore this military unit and discuss its actual use and difference from other units that have often had overlapping functions, as well as its connections with other similar military formations.
