Abstract
In this interview, Sandra Rose reflects on her experiences growing up in suburban Illinois, shaped by her Lithuanian immigrant background and the post-WWII era. Raised in Western Springs, she recalls a tight-knit community defined by traditional gender roles, suburban expansion, and shifting property values. Sandra describes how class differences became more pronounced over time as wealthier families sought larger homes. She also touches on evolving social dynamics, particularly the increasing diversity in schools and her personal growth moving from private Catholic to public education. Sandra’s journey into medicine was driven by her desire to challenge gender norms, inspired by her mother’s unfulfilled medical aspirations. She shares her experiences with gender discrimination in the medical field, while also noting positive shifts in social inclusion, particularly regarding changing attitudes toward LGBTQ+ communities.
