From Ruin to Redemption? Michigan Central Station, the Heidelberg Project,and Narrative Control over Detroit's "Rise from the Ashes"

This thesis examines the intertwined histories of Michigan Central Station and the Heidelberg Project as two of Detroit’s most symbolically charged sites, situating both within Jerry Herron’s framework of the “humiliation of history.” Through archival research––including newspaper coverage surrounding the 1991 and 1999 Heidelberg demolitions––alongside oral history interviews with Detroit-based artists and ethnographic observation of both sites in their contemporary forms, the project traces how authority over urban meaning shifts across time. I argue that the two sites illuminate Herron’s concept through different mechanisms. In the 1990s, Heidelberg exposed the humiliations of Detroit’s industrial past so directly that it provoked attempts at erasure, while Michigan Central Station, largely obfuscated by those in power, became an open terrain for artists and urban explorers to produce their own meanings. In the 2000s-2010s, Detroit’s ruins entered global circulation through photography and media narratives that aestheticized decline, transforming abandonment into spectacle. Drawing on scholarship on ruin aesthetics alongside theoretical insights from Walter Benjamin, this thesis examines how such representations flatten complex histories through a distant gaze. Finally, the contemporary redevelopment of Michigan Central Station and the institutionalization of the Heidelberg Project reflect a new stage in which Detroit’s ruins are incorporated into what Sharon Zukin describes as the city’s “symbolic economy.” Across these moments, from exposure to aestheticization to curated redevelopment, the thesis argues that what ultimately shifts is not simply the condition of Detroit’s built environment but the authority to narrate its past and shape its future.
