Description

Zohran Mamdani’s unexpected victory in the 2025 New York City mayoral race drew national attention as a case of insurgent political success, rising from just 1% in early polling to ultimately winning the election. This paper draws on 14 interviews with campaign staff, journalists, and content creators and 14 survey responses from voters in order to examine how campaigns are constructed, shaped, and interpreted by different stakeholders. The findings show that Mamdani’s campaign strategically centered affordability as a unifying issue, leveraged digital media to disseminate and adapt its messaging, and relied on grassroots networks to build credibility and mobilize support among a diverse coalition. These strategies were not simply deployed top-down but were continuously reshaped through feedback from media coverage, online audiences, and voter engagement.
