Description

The use of ChatGPT and other large language models has become increasingly popular among students in higher education. From writing assistance to solving problem sets, AI can support students in a wide variety of ways across disciplines. Its growing presence raises the question of where the boundary lies in determining acceptable use. For first-generation college students (FGCS), this question takes on added meaning due to their distinctive experiences in higher education. Does AI diminish the sense of accomplishment and work ethic that these students often take pride in? Or does it serve as a tool that promotes social and educational mobility? Additionally, how do peer attitudes and the type of institution influence these perceptions? In this paper, I explore the current climate surrounding the use of AI among first-generation college students. Drawing on existing literature and twelve interviews with current students, I find that FGCSs generally view AI more as an advantage than a disadvantage, provided it is used ethically and responsibly.
