Making a Socialist Artist

This thesis argues that the transition of the Chinese film industry from a cultural industry to an ideological state apparatus results simultaneously from the state's strength to include all institutions in its central planning system and its bureaucratic weaknesses that prevented the film industry from operating in the way the state had expected. These weaknesses increased the tension between filmmakers, which further prevented the film industry's improvement and reform.
