The argument advanced is that the market system is constituted by a contradiction that operationalizes it and generates surplus value through the absorption of racial stratification by economic value. This contradiction consists of racial subordination alongside the perception of an equal and neutral market. While the contradiction of subordination and equality extends broadly throughout Western thought and institutions, it takes on a special function within the institution of the market system, actualizing the realization of profit. After an examination of this process, the paper turns to a study of Friedrich Hayek’s theorization on markets to demonstrate that the racial structure of the market can be gleaned directly from his work. 000004212 542__ $$fCC BY 000004212 6531_ $$aRacial Capitalism 000004212 6531_ $$aNeoliberalism 000004212 6531_ $$aStructural Racism 000004212 6531_ $$aImperialism 000004212 6531_ $$aRacialization 000004212 6531_ $$aRace and Housing 000004212 690__ $$aSocial Sciences Division 000004212 691__ $$aMA Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS) 000004212 7001_ $$aToppin, Eloy$$uUniversity of Chicago 000004212 72012 $$aJennifer Pitts 000004212 72014 $$aDawn Herrera 000004212 8564_ $$9587f776c-c057-4c94-a1f0-0f408e46df57$$s443841$$uhttps://knowledge.uchicago.edu/record/4212/files/Contrived%20in%20Contradiction_Toppin%20MAPSS%202022%20Thesis%20Final.pdf$$erestricted 000004212 908__ $$aI agree 000004212 909CO $$ooai:uchicago.tind.io:4212$$pGLOBAL_SET$$pTheses 000004212 983__ $$aThesis
