In the past it was common to say that forms explain their instances, rather than causing them to be. More recently, scholars began urging us to take Socrates more literally. I side with them while insisting that causation by participation in form must be a spatiotemporal affair, rather than a mysterious relation between transcendent and sensible reality. This leads me to develop an account of forms that distinguishes between their roles as intelligibles, and as immanent causal powers, with surprising implications for Plato’s epistemology. Most notably, I argue that Plato’s admission of forms into the sensible world as causal powers casts doubt on his commitment to innate knowledge (i.e., the theory of recollection). 000012894 540__ $$a© 2024 Sarale Ben-Asher 000012894 6531_ $$aPlato 000012894 6531_ $$aMetaphysics 000012894 6531_ $$aEpistemology 000012894 6531_ $$aForms 000012894 6531_ $$aRecollection 000012894 690__ $$aHumanities Division 000012894 691__ $$aPhilosophy 000012894 7001_ $$aBen Asher, Sarale$$uUniversity of Chicago 000012894 72012 $$aAgnes Callard 000012894 72014 $$aElizabeth Asmis 000012894 72014 $$aGabriel Richardson Lear 000012894 72014 $$aJohn Proios 000012894 8564_ $$yDissertation$$95de323db-7bb4-46f8-ad8e-df76a2603538$$s1384497$$uhttps://knowledge.uchicago.edu/record/12894/files/BenAsherDissertationLibrary722_submission.pdf$$eEmbargo (2026-08-01) 000012894 8564_ $$9476b540c-937c-4ea2-880c-bfa98b7d6b29$$erestricted_admin$$s87048$$uhttps://knowledge.uchicago.edu/record/12894/files/Department%20Approval%20Form%207-22-24.pdf$$yApproval Form 000012894 908__ $$aI agree 000012894 909CO $$ooai:uchicago.tind.io:12894$$pDissertations$$pGLOBAL_SET 000012894 983__ $$aDissertation
